• Title:NCCU Department of Diplomacy Delegation to the 2020 National Model United Nations (NMUN)
  • Post date:2019-08-30

It has been a tradition since 2006 that every year the Dept. of Diplomacy at National Chengchi University sends a delegation to attend the National Model United Nations (NMUN; 美國全國模擬聯合國會議) held in New York, where the headquarters of the U.N. is. In 2017, a Diplomacy delegation led by Prof. Kwei-Bo Huang (黃奎博) joined the NMUN and paid visits to various institutions and people with in-depth exchanges in New York City. Starting from spring 2018, every year, Prof. Huang has led the delegation to complete a democracy and international affairs tour in Washington, D.C. after the New York-based NMUN.

The 2020 NMUN will be held on March 29-April 2, in New York City. In addition to NMUN that will allow you to meet delegates from all over the world and enter the General Assembly Hall of the U.N., some other activities may be arranged during your stay in New York. Once in Washington, D.C., the delegation may be going to call upon the Taipei Economic & Cultural Representative Office (TECRO) in Washington, D.C., visit one or two universities and meet with their faculty members and students, as well as visit one or two well-known think tanks or non-profit organizations in the field of democracy promotion or international affairs.

A tentative schedule of events for this delegation is between March 28 and April 9, 2020. All student delegates must fly as a group from Taoyuan International Airport on the same flights.

Qualifications for application are as below:

**Diplomacy-majored sophomore students or above (including double-majored undergraduates and M.A. students) who have completed at least 3 credits of “International Relations” or its equivalent.

**A good command of English

**A hardworking team player who can accustom herself/himself to living overseas

**Able to participate proactively (with few permitted leaves, to be discussed) in the training sessions (including those in the winter vacation)

**Applicants with experience in previous model conference(s) or overseas activities are preferred.

Application deadline is 12:00 noon, September 16 (Monday), 2019. Those interested should either email the following documents (in one single file) to Miss Yi-Hsuan Chen (陳怡萱助教) at dip50916@nccu.edu.tw (Department of Diplomacy’s office), with the subject line “NMUN Application-[your Chinese name],” or leave the hardcopy to the wood mailbox of Prof. Kwei-Bo Huang, located outside the Department’s office by the deadline:

**English C.V. (with Chinese name and personal contact information)

**English biography (500 words at most) or class paper

**Photocopy of the transcript of NCCU or previous college

**Other favorable evidence demonstrating the applicant’s superior qualifications

The date/time for selection interviews, if any, and the other information will be emailed to the applicants after September 20, 2019. Expectedly, there will be 10 to 20 delegates to 2020 NMUN and the other activities in the U.S. The number of accepted delegates will also hinge on the possible cooperation with University of San Carlos in Guatemala.

Those recruited must participate proactively, hopefully fully, in the training sessions (including those in the winter vacation) and pass the evaluation to be qualified to represent the Dept. of Diplomacy to the 2020 NMUN.

There is an NT$5000 deposit for every delegate, which will be refunded after her/his completion of the trip to NYC and DC. If the delegate cannot continue to participate once the flight ticket has been booked, s/he will be responsible for paying all charges/fees and carrying out contractual obligations imposed by the airline. The Dept. of Diplomacy and Professor Huang will not be liable to provide any refund.

Depending on the activities to be engaged and on the hotel room types, each student delegate may be going to pay NT$65000 to $71000 (an estimated amount only). Partially funded by certain domestic agencies or individuals, each delegate will pay for her/his travel and commuting expenses, registration fees, visa fees, accommodation (including meals), and any self-incurred expense. Beginning from late September of this year, delegates will be grouped and guided to solicit some funding from the University, government agencies and/or corporations. More information will be revealed either by contacting Prof. Huang or Miss Chen, or in the letter of acceptance.
